How To Update Without Remodeling

Updated: Jan 25, 2019

You can make high impact updates to your home without remodeling. It's all about adding textures, changing colors, and maximizing the best features of your home. Here are some changes you can make to easily update your home without remodeling.

The New Accent Wall

Create an accent wall, but skip the paint and choose a textural finish instead. Make it easier by looking for a wall with inside corners on each side to save the trouble of creating a finished edge or working around a corner. What you put on that accent wall behind your sofa or behind your bed depends on the style you enjoy. Into farmhouse? Add ship lap. Living eco-chic? Add re-claimed wood. Enjoy coastal? Add some bead board. Industrial is your vibe? Add corrugated metal panels. Prefer transitional? Add some grasscloth wallpaper. All about modern? Add laminated acrylic panels. Be brave with your accent wall. Adding a finish that makes a statement about your personal style is right on trend.

Decorate Your Ceiling

Ceilings are frequently forgotten but they can offer you wonderful opportunities for design. In 2019 trends are moving beyond accent colors into texture and pattern. With so many amazing designs and easy to install peel & stick products it's never been a better time to wallpaper your ceiling. Another option for ceilings that's popular now is wood, like stained tongue & groove wood, reclaimed pallet or barn wood, painted bead board or ship lap, parquet or patterned wood, wood beams, and the list goes on. If wood is not the material that excites you then maybe you're into metal. Stamped metal ceiling tiles are pretty well known, but for a more modern look many are exploring corrugated metal, stamped metal, and reclaimed metal signs. And for those with strong DIY skills or just a skilled installer, tile and veneer brick are still incredible finishes to add to any ceiling.

Keep the Cabinets, Change the Hardware

You don't have to get new cabinets to update your kitchen. Take a shortcut and replace the hardware. You don't have to use exactly the same size handles and knobs either. If you have knobs on your cabinet doors, remove them and use the drilled hole for the bottom of a new handle, then just drill a new hole for the top of the handle. If you have knobs on your drawers you can easily cover the drilled hole with a cup pull or handle with a backplate. If your island is a different color than your perimeter cabinets then use different hardware on the island, and don't be afraid to mix metals.
